Position Overview:
The Citadel is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to serve as the Director of Athletic Equipment Operations. The Director will oversee the equipment management needs of 16 NCAA Division I athletic programs, ensuring the proper procurement, maintenance, and distribution of equipment for practices, games, and special events. The ideal candidate will be an organized, strategic leader with extensive knowledge of athletic equipment, NCAA regulations, and best practices in equipment operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the procurement, inventory, maintenance, and distribution of athletic equipment and apparel for all 16 NCAA Division I programs at The Citadel.
  • Develop and manage the athletic equipment budget, ensuring cost-effective purchasing and adherence to financial guidelines.
  • Supervise and train a team of full-time, part-time, and student employees, ensuring smooth operations and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with coaching staff, athletic trainers, and administrators to meet the equipment needs of each program.
  • Manage football practice and game-day equipment setup and breakdown for home events and football away games, ensuring all teams are prepared and have the necessary resources.
  • Ensure all equipment meets NCAA safety and compliance standards.
  • Maintain accurate inventory tracking systems for all athletic gear, apparel, and supplies.
  • Oversee the storage and organization of all equipment, ensuring secure and efficient access.
  • Provide leadership in the implementation of new technologies and innovations in athletic equipment and inventory systems.
  • Work closely with sports medicine staff to ensure the safe and proper use of equipment for injury prevention and player safety.
  • Oversee the laundering of all practice and competition apparel for 16 NCAA Division I athletic programs, ensuring the cleanliness, maintenance, and timely delivery of items to athletes and teams.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 2-4 years’ experience in athletic equipment management, preferably in a collegiate or NCAA Division I setting.  5+ years of Athletic Equipment management experience may be substituted for Bachelor’s degree.
  • Strong understanding of NCAA regulations and standards for athletic equipment and safety.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory experience, with the ability to manage a diverse team.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in budget management and procurement.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and inventory management systems.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment (up to 50 pounds) and stand for extended periods.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel for events when required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification by the Athletic Equipment Managers Association (AEMA) or similar professional organization.  Must be obtained within 1st year of employment if not current.
  • Experience managing equipment for multiple NCAA Division I sports.
  • Familiarity with advanced inventory management and tracking technologies.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel for events when required.

Additional Requirements:

This position requires outside work in all elements as well as evening, early morning and weekend work at various times of the year. Overnight travel as necessary during the football season. Must be able to lift and move heavy objects and work for long periods of time without sitting. This person must also understand, comply with and uphold all academic, institutional, SOCON, and NCAA regulations.
