The Tommy & Victoria Baker School of Business at The Citadel invites applications and nominations for the W. Frank Hipp Distinguished Chair in Business Administration.  This position resides in the Department of Accounting and Finance.

The W. Frank Hipp Distinguished Chair is an endowed executive-in-residence position established to bring the experience and perspective of a distinguished senior business executive into the educational environment of The Citadel. Consistent with the terms establishing the Chair, the successful candidate will have a demonstrated history of significant leadership responsibilities in a complex organization and will combine substantial executive experience with a strong commitment to educating and mentoring the next generation of business leaders.

The governing gift agreement specifically provides for the Chair to be filled by a “distinguished senior executive with a successful history of significant leadership responsibilities in a complex organization” and contemplates a senior executive in residence rather than limiting the position to a senior academician.

This is a full-time, nine-month appointment in the Tommy & Victoria Baker School of Business. The successful candidate will receive an initial three-year appointment, with the potential for subsequent one-year extensions following annual review and at the option of The Citadel, consistent with the terms of the endowed Chair.

Responsibilities

The W. Frank Hipp Distinguished Chair will contribute to the academic and professional mission of the Baker School of Business through teaching, student engagement, service to the School, and engagement with the broader business community.  The Chair has traditionally served in the Department of Accounting and Finance.

The Chair will:

• Teach 3 courses per semester.  A reduced course load may be considered for a candidate who takes on additional program responsibilities;
• Teach primarily undergraduate courses, with assignments based upon the candidate's academic preparation, professional qualifications, areas of expertise, and the needs of the School;
• Serve as a resource to students, faculty, and leadership of the Baker School of Business;
• Engage with students through mentoring, professional development activities, executive presentations, and other opportunities that bring senior executive experience into the educational environment;
• Contribute to enhancing the reputation and visibility of The Citadel and the Baker School of Business;
• Assist in developing and strengthening relationships between the Baker School of Business and the business and professional communities;
• Participate in appropriate School and College activities where the Chair's executive experience and professional perspective can contribute to the School's mission; and
• Represent the Baker School of Business appropriately with business leaders, alumni, prospective students, and other external constituencies.
• Candidates possessing an appropriate terminal degree may also be assigned to teach graduate courses.
• These responsibilities incorporate the four responsibilities identified in the gift agreement: teaching students, serving as a resource to the School, enhancing The Citadel's image, and assisting in building stronger relationships for the School.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess:

• A minimum of a master's degree in Business or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution;
• A distinguished record of senior executive leadership with significant leadership responsibilities in a complex organization;
• Demonstrated professional accomplishments in business, industry, professional practice, entrepreneurship, government, the nonprofit sector, or another organizational setting relevant to business education;
• The ability to translate substantial professional and executive experience into meaningful educational experiences for undergraduate students;
• Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills;
• The ability to develop and maintain relationships with business and community leaders; and
• A commitment to student development and to the educational mission of The Citadel.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates possessing:

• A Ph.D. or other appropriate terminal degree in Accounting or Finance;
• A Master of Accountancy (MAcc), Master of Finance (MFin), or Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a concentration in Accounting or Finance;
• Significant C-suite or comparable senior executive experience;
• A record of leadership involving strategic decision-making, organizational change, financial responsibility, and the development of people and organizations;
• Experience serving on corporate, nonprofit, governmental, or other governing boards;
• A substantial network within the business and professional community;
• Experience teaching, mentoring, speaking to, or otherwise working with university students and emerging professionals; and
• Professional certifications or credentials appropriate to the candidate's field.

About the W. Frank Hipp Distinguished Chair

The W. Frank Hipp Distinguished Chair in Business Administration was established through the generosity of the Hipp family to advance business education at The Citadel.

The governing gift agreement was amended in 2003 to broaden the criteria for the Chair to include a distinguished senior executive with a proven record of significant leadership in a complex organization.

The agreement identifies four principal responsibilities for the Chair: teaching undergraduate and graduate students, serving as a resource for the School, enhancing The Citadel's image, and helping build stronger relationships for the School.

The position therefore offers an accomplished business leader the opportunity to bring significant real-world leadership and executive experience directly into the classroom while contributing more broadly to student development and the advancement of the Baker School of Business.

Appointment and Teaching Expectations

• The W. Frank Hipp Distinguished Chair is a full-time, nine-month position.
• Teaching assignments will primarily be at the undergraduate level and will be determined by the candidate's academic preparation, professional qualifications, areas of expertise, and the needs of the Baker School of Business.
• Candidates possessing a Ph.D. or other appropriate terminal degree may also be assigned to teach graduate courses.
• The initial appointment will be for three years, with the potential for subsequent one-year extensions following annual review and at the option of The Citadel.
