PROVOST AND DEAN OF THE COLLEGE
The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, seeks an accomplished academic leader to serve as Provost and Dean of the College. Reporting to the President, the Provost serves as the College's Chief Academic Officer, directing the Deans of the College's Schools and collaborating with the Commandant's office to align the academic and military components of a Citadel education. The Provost will also collaborate with the college’s other Vice Presidents as part of the President’s senior leadership team.
Founded in 1842, The Citadel is one of the nation's senior military colleges, located on a 300-acre campus in Charleston, South Carolina. The College is home to the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, numbering approximately 2,300 students, as well as The Citadel Graduate College, which serves close to 1,000 students through evening, online, and graduate programs. The Citadel has been named the No. 1 public regional university in the South by U.S. News & World Report for 15 consecutive years, and the No. 1 public college for veterans in the South for eight years. Gen. Frank McKenzie, a 1979 Citadel graduate, began his tenure as the College's 21st President in July of this year.
Academic programs are organized across the Tommy and Victoria Baker School of Business, the School of Engineering, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics, the Zucker Family School of Education, and the Krause School for Leadership and Ethics, along with The Citadel Graduate College. The College maintains an 11:1 student-to-faculty ratio, and nearly all faculty hold a doctorate or the highest degree in their field.
The successful candidate will bring a record of academic leadership, including experience with faculty affairs, curriculum, and accreditation, along with the ability to lead within a structured, values-driven military campus culture. Qualified candidates must hold an earned doctorate or terminal degree, possess scholarly credentials appropriate for a tenured appointment, and demonstrate a successful record of senior academic leadership at the dean level or higher. Experience with both a traditional undergraduate program and adult, graduate, or online education is preferred. Military experience is not necessary, but the Provost will wear a uniform and will hold the grade of Brigadier General in the South Carolina Militia (SCM).
