About the Role
The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, invites applications for an Instructional Designer and Technologist I in the Center for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CEITL). This role focuses on Canvas, learning technology, and faculty support. You will be a go-to resource for the tools faculty, staff, and students use every day, and you will help the campus community use them well through responsive support, practical training, and collaboration on course design. This is a full-time, on-campus position reporting to the Director of CEITL, with occasional evening or weekend work. Remote and hybrid arrangements are not available.

CEITL promotes effective teaching and learning at The Citadel through faculty development, instructional design, educational technology, digital accessibility, and AI literacy programming. You will join a collaborative team where your work has a direct impact on faculty and students across campus.
Key Responsibilities
Learning Technology Support
- Serve as a subject matter expert on Canvas, assisting with configuration, troubleshooting, and system updates in partnership with campus IT colleagues.
- Manage and support instructional technology tools integrated with Canvas, including Canvas Studio and Cidi Labs tools such as DesignPLUS and UDOIT.
- Provide clear, timely, and patient support for Canvas and instructional technology questions from faculty, staff, and students.
Training and Communication
- Design and deliver workshops and training sessions for faculty and staff on Canvas, instructional technologies, and productivity software.
- Develop and deliver online orientation for students, faculty, and staff, including coordination with Academic Orientation.
- Build and maintain Canvas-based resource courses, guides, and other support materials, keeping them current and promoting them to the campus community.
Digital Accessibility
- Train and support faculty in creating accessible course materials and digital content that meet WCAG 2.1 AA and ADA Title II requirements, including the remediation of existing content.
- Use accessibility tools and reports to identify issues and help faculty prioritize and resolve them.
Emerging Technologies
- Evaluate, pilot, and implement new instructional tools, including AI-enhanced technologies, with attention to sound pedagogy, accessibility, and responsible use.
- Help faculty and staff learn to use AI tools and other emerging technologies effectively through training, consultations, and practical resources.
Faculty Partnership and Course Design
- Collaborate with faculty to build and refine online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced courses in Canvas.
- Apply instructional design best practices and course quality standards, such as Quality Matters, to support student success.
- Support the ongoing assessment of instructional effectiveness for new and existing online programs and courses.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in education, instructional design, educational technology, information technology, or a related field.
- Three years of experience in educational technology, instructional design, online learning, or LMS and learning technology support. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
- Hands-on experience with Canvas or a comparable learning management system.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a service-oriented approach and the ability to explain technical solutions clearly to non-technical users.
- Ability to manage multiple projects at once and meet deadlines tied to the academic calendar.
- Ability to work on campus in Charleston, South Carolina.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in instructional design, educational technology, curriculum and instruction, or a related field.
- Experience supporting or training faculty in a higher education setting.
- Experience with LMS configuration, integrations, or user support, including tools such as Canvas Studio, DesignPLUS, and UDOIT.
- Knowledge of digital accessibility standards and remediation practices.
- Experience or demonstrated interest in applying AI tools thoughtfully to teaching and learning.
- Experience with Quality Matters or a comparable course quality review framework.
