Position Summary
The University seeks an internal innovative and collaborative Assistant Provost to provide campus-wide leadership in faculty innovation, artificial intelligence, and strategic partnerships. Reporting to the Provost, this role advances institutional priorities by strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration, expanding externally funded initiatives, and positioning the University as a leader in applied AI, defense technologies, and industry-engaged education and research.
This position supports faculty across schools, builds sustainable innovation portfolios, and translates emerging technologies into meaningful academic and societal impact.
Key Responsibilities
Campus-Wide Leadership
- Provide university-level leadership for faculty innovation initiatives spanning multiple schools and disciplines
- Advance institutional priorities supported by state, federal, and philanthropic funding
- Support strategic efforts that reshape how the University engages in teaching, research, and service
Artificial Intelligence & Emerging Technologies
- Lead institutional initiatives in Artificial Intelligence, algorithmic integrity, autonomy, and data-driven systems
- Develop and oversee AI-focused academic and professional programming
- Establish guidance and standards for AI use in instruction, including grading tools, academic integrity, and responsible adoption
- Identify and mitigate faculty and institutional friction points related to AI, data, and statistical practices
Faculty Innovation & Development
- Mentor faculty in building competitive research, innovation, and funding portfolios
- Support interdisciplinary teams and cross-school collaborations
- Advance faculty development through workshops, institutes, and targeted programming
- Foster a culture of service, experimentation, and continuous improvement
Strategic Partnerships & External Engagement
- Build and sustain partnerships with industry, government, and defense organizations
- Expand institutional capacity and visibility in defense technologies and applied AI
- Cultivate relationships with federal agencies, foundations, and technology partners
- Serve as an institutional connector between academic programs and external stakeholders
Curriculum Innovation & AI Workforce Development
- Collaborate with faculty to embed AI literacy, applied tools, and ethical frameworks across the curriculum while respecting disciplinary context and academic standards.
- Design and advance workforce-aligned AI pathways—including courses, certificates, and experiential learning—that translate institutional strengths into career-ready student outcomes.
Programs & Summer Initiatives
- Develop and oversee summer workshops and institutes aligned with innovation and AI
- Support summer instructional models, including overload or adjunct-supported offerings, as appropriate
Qualifications
- Required:
- Earned doctorate in engineering, computer science, or a closely related field
- Must have served in the rank of full Professor and be tenured
- Demonstrated success in academic leadership, faculty development, and cross-unit collaboration
- Record of externally funded initiatives, including federal support
- Expertise in AI, data, or emerging technologies in academic or applied contexts
- Preferred:
- Experience leading AI centers, institutes, or major innovation initiatives
- Background working with defense, government, or technology industry partners
- Strong mentoring orientation and ability to translate vision into scalable programs
Appointment
11-month administrative appointment (teaching 6 hours per semester)
