Full Professor in Mathematics and Head, Department of Mathematical Sciences at The Citadel
The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, seeks a seasoned leader for the position of Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, a tenured position at the rank of Professor.
Located in beautiful Charleston, S.C., The Citadel is a fully accredited, public, comprehensive, co-educational college with a student body of 2500 day undergraduate and 1200 evening and graduate students. For the past thirteen years, U.S. News and World Report has ranked The Citadel as the top public college in the South among masters granting institutions. The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers the Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and mathematics with a concentration in data analytics, undergraduate minors in applied mathematics and applied statistics and data analysis, and graduate courses supporting the Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics offered by the Zucker Family School of Education.
The Citadel supports faculty through internal funding that is available annually for research, development, and travel. Salary and fringe benefits are competitive, and other benefits include convenient parking and access to the Citadel Beach House located on the Isle of Palms. The Provost has identified the Department Head of Mathematical Sciences as a strategic position for the advancement of The Citadel’s mission. Thus, on-campus housing will be made available, if desired, for the selected applicant. This housing, offered at a sub-market lease rate, will allow the new Department Head to walk to work, and is located just a short drive from the heart of downtown Charleston.
Strategic planning and visioning within the department; development, implementation and assessment of programs; in consultation with faculty, management of teaching and service assignments; faculty development, mentoring, and performance review; conflict resolution; communication between the department and other units on campus about institutional plans, policies, activities, and expectations; in coordination with the Dean of the Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics (SFSSM) and the faculty, development and maintenance of enrollment targets; and the advancement of collaborative relationships and activities with other departments within the SFSSM and across the College.
An earned doctoral degree in Mathematics or closely-related field from an accredited institution; successful leadership and/or administrative experience in a university setting; a record of teaching, research, and professional accomplishment that qualify the candidate for tenure and the rank of Professor in the Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics.
Evidence of exemplary leadership in supporting and facilitating teaching and scholarship; excellent management, supervisory, and budgetary skills; demonstrated ability to build trust through collaborative decision-making, shared governance, and commitment to academic freedom; dedication to the enhancement of diversity and inclusion among students, staff and faculty; experience in obtaining external funding; superior communication skills and an ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies internal and external to The Citadel; and success in growing undergraduate programs or developing new ones.
