The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, invites applicants for a tenure-track position in the Department of Chemistry at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a preferred start date of January 2024 but no later than Aug 2024.
Located in beautiful and historic Charleston, S.C., The Citadel is a public, comprehensive, co-educational college that is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The Citadel has about 2,300 undergraduate students who make up the South Carolina Corps of Cadets. Out of the Corps of Cadets, 1 out of 3 graduates earn a military commission. Students can choose from 31 Majors, 57 Minors, pre-health professions, and pre-law. The Citadel has another 1000 students who attend The Citadel Graduate College, a civilian evening and online program that offers graduate and professional degrees as well as undergraduate programs. Faculty support the military goals of the college by appearing in uniform anytime they interact with cadets. One of seven departments in the Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics, the Department of Chemistry offers an ACS certified Bachelor of Science degree with an option to obtain a Biochemistry concentration. Additionally, the department offers a Bachelor of Art degree with options to obtain Environmental Chemistry and Clinical Chemistry concentrations. The Citadel supports faculty research, professional development, and travel through internal funding. Salary and fringe benefits are competitive. The contract is a full-time, 9-month tenure-track position.
Job Responsibilities
The primary teaching responsibility of the successful candidate will be biochemistry, and general chemistry along with the development of courses, including labs, to support our Clinical Chemistry concentration. The department staffs a two-semester biochemistry course and a lab at the senior level. Other responsibilities include mentoring students through advising and undergraduate research, participating in curriculum revision, creating new courses, teaching in the general education curriculum, outreach and faculty governance. The candidate is expected to achieve and maintain scholarly productivity consistent with departmental and college-wide policy for tenure and promotion.
Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate by the time of appointment from an accredited institution in biochemistry, chemistry, or a closely-related field of study.
Preferred Qualifications
Additional consideration will be given to candidates who demonstrate excellence in undergraduate instruction; experience mentoring and engaging undergraduates in research; and expertise in either material science, bioengineering, pharmacology or other cross-disciplinary fields.

At least two references should address the candidate’s teaching effectiveness and experience. At least one reference should address the candidate’s scholarship.
