Department Head and Professor of Intelligence and Security Studies

The Citadel: the Military College of South Carolina, seeks a seasoned academic leader for the position of Head of the Department of Intelligence and Security Studies with tenure at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The Department of Intelligence and Security Studies offers the Bachelor of Arts degree, Master of Arts degree, and Certificate in Intelligence Analysis. 

 

Position Responsibilities

Responsibilities as the department head include strategic planning and visioning within the department; development, implementation and assessment of programs; in consultation with faculty, management of teaching and service assignments; faculty development, mentoring, and performance review; conflict resolution; communication of department, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, College, and institutional plans, policies, activities, and expectations; in coordination with the Dean of the SHSS and faculty, development and maintenance of enrollment targets; and fostering collaborative relationships and activities with other departments within the SHSS and across the College.

Department Leadership: As the Department Head, you will provide visionary leadership and strategic direction to the Department of Intelligence and Security Studies. You will be responsible for managing faculty, fostering an environment of academic excellence, and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration within the department and across the institution, including with colleagues in the Department of Cyber and Computer Sciences.  Support for and leadership of our Citadel in DC program is also important to this position.

Teaching and Mentoring: You will teach two classes per semester in intelligence and security studies. Your courses should engage and challenge students, utilizing innovative pedagogical methods and incorporating real-world applications. Additionally, you will provide guidance and mentorship to students, helping them develop their academic and professional skills.

Research and Scholarship: We expect you to maintain an active and impactful research agenda in the field of intelligence and security studies. You should seek to publish books and in reputable journals, seek opportunities for external funding, and present your work at national and international conferences. Your research should contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field and enhance the reputation of The Citadel and the Department.

Service and Engagement: You will actively participate in service activities both within the department and the broader Citadel community. This may include committee work, academic advising, and involvement in professional organizations. You will also have the opportunity to engage with the local community, government agencies, and industry partners to promote collaboration and foster mutually beneficial relationships. 

 

Required Qualifications

Minimum requirements should be included an earned doctoral degree in Intelligence or Security Studies or closely-related field from an accredited institution and should be committed to the advancement of undergraduate and graduate education, have a distinguished record of teaching, research and professional accomplishment, have strong leadership and management abilities, and be dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion among students, staff and faculty. Continuation of an active research program is expected and will be supported. The successful candidate must be eligible for an appointment at the rank of tenured Associate or full Professor.

Professional Network: An established network of professional contacts in the intelligence and security community is advantageous. Active involvement in relevant professional organizations is highly desirable.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include evidence of exemplary leadership in supporting and facilitating teaching and scholarship; excellent management, supervisory, and budgetary skills; demonstrated ability to build trust through collaborative decision-making, shared governance, and commitment to academic freedom; experience in obtaining external funding; superior communication skills and an ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies internal and external to The Citadel; and success in growing undergraduate programs or developing new ones.
