The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, seeks a seasoned leader for the position of Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, a tenured position at the rank of Professor. The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers the Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and mathematics with a concentration in data analytics, undergraduate minors in applied mathematics and applied statistics and data analysis, and graduate courses supporting the Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics offered by the Zucker Family School of Education. The Citadel supports faculty scholarship and professional development. Internal funding is available annually for research, development, and travel.
Position Responsibilities
Responsibilities as the department head include strategic planning and visioning within the department; development, implementation and assessment of programs; in consultation with faculty, management of teaching and service assignments; faculty development, mentoring, and performance review; conflict resolution; communication of department, the Swain Family of School of Science and Mathematics (SFSSM), college, and institutional plans, policies, activities, and expectations; in coordination with the Dean of the SFSSM and faculty, development and maintenance of enrollment targets; and fostering collaborative relationships and activities with other departments within the SFSSM and across the College.
Required Qualifications
Minimum requirements should be included an earned doctoral degree in Mathematics or closely-related field from an accredited institution and should be committed to the advancement of undergraduate and graduate education, have a distinguished record of teaching, research and professional accomplishment, have strong leadership and management abilities, and be dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion among students, staff and faculty. Continuation of an active research program is expected and will be supported. The successful candidate must be eligible for an appointment at the rank of tenured full Professor in mathematics.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include evidence of exemplary leadership in supporting and facilitating teaching and scholarship; excellent management, supervisory, and budgetary skills; demonstrated ability to build trust through collaborative decision-making, shared governance, and commitment to academic freedom; experience in obtaining external funding; superior communication skills and an ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies internal and external to The Citadel; and success in growing undergraduate programs or developing new ones.
