Job Responsibilities:

The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina is seeking a Captain in the Office of Public Safety. The Captain is responsible for responding to requests for information and assistance from other agencies and campus entities, completes associated documentation for purchasing and budgetary program and manages departmental equipment inventory and oversees ticket functions and parking permitting.

Will protect confidential information by preventing unauthorized release, both verbal and/or written. Will assist officers with matters within his purview, preserves and maintains accountability and chain of custody for all collected evidence. Ensures all vital data is entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) system, collaborates with the Desk Corporal to ensure information entered into NCIC remains current and valid and responsible for the accountability/serviceability of assigned department equipment. Ensures leadership development and professional opportunities are researched and offered to the Operations Captain for dissemination to all other members. Researches appropriate plans, theorem and options for increased professional development in law enforcement management training.

This position must be available to provide management for critical incidents including civil unrest, natural and man-made disasters, high-profile crimes and police actions or other significant department operations. Must be able to maintain a physical fitness level enabling continual law enforcement/performance of police duties and be able to fulfill all the essential duties of a sworn police officer and perform the functional role of lower ranks as required and is occasionally expected to attend off-site training and to provide mutual aid to other agencies or locations, based on the needs of the department.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Must possess one of the scenarios below:

  • a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and twelve (12) years of law enforcement experience, six (6) of which must have been in a supervisory role.
  • a High School/GED diploma/certificate and seventeen (17) years of law enforcement experience, seven (7) of which must have been in a supervisory role.
  • any equivalent combination of education/experience/training and five (5) or more years supervisory experience in law enforcement
  • Must have South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy certification as a Class 1 Law Enforcement officer at time of appointment, or must be previously certified in another state or federal system.
  • Must obtain SC Class 1 certification within six (6) months of beginning employment.

 

Employee must be able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal format.  Must maintain weapons qualifications and physical self-defense skills to include all firearms, taser, straight baton and OC spray. Must be able to operate computers, sophisticated alarms, communication devices, cameras and early warning equipment. Must possess a current South Carolina Driver's License. Leadership, motivational, analytical, and organizational skills are essential.
