The mission of the Department of Nursing is to educate and develop our students to become principled leaders in the health care environment and profession of nursing by incorporating the core values of The Citadel into the learning experience. 

The Associate Professor of Nursing contributes to administration, planning, implementation and evaluation of the baccalaureate in nursing program.  The primary role is the education of students both in the classroom and clinical setting.  The individual reports to the Department Head, Swain Department of Nursing.  The Associate Professor has responsibilities in the area of service, teaching and scholarship.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching:

  • Designs and coordinates assigned courses including objectives and goals of the course, syllabus development, and evaluation methods;
  • Serves as the faculty expert in the areas of women’s health and pediatrics.
  • Participates in curriculum revisions and program development;
  • Participates in the academic advisement and counseling of students;
  • Assesses achievements of students;
  • Assures that students provide safe care to clients through direct observation and supervision or by working with clinical instructors and/or preceptors.
  • Assumes overall responsibility for clinical courses that may be directly taught by clinical instructors;
  • Actively participates in the education of students through formal classes and mentoring/precepting;
  • Works with the lab instructors to develop appropriate simulation experiences for students who are in clinical courses;
  • Serves as a mentor to junior faculty.

 Service:

  • Assumes a leadership role in the overall administration of the nursing program including strategic planning, implementation, evaluation and revisions based on objective feedback and trends in nursing education;
  • Participates in assuring that the nursing program meets all regulatory and accrediting standards on an ongoing basis;
  • Participates in nursing faculty selection. May serve as chair of a search committee;
  • Works with clinical agencies as appropriate to identify clinical opportunities for students and qualified preceptors;
  • Forms partnerships with community health organizations through committee and individual work;
  • Maintains competencies in the area of expertise through review of the literature and attendance at conferences;
  • Participates and plays a leadership role in professional organizations;
  • Engages in clinical work as appropriate.

Scholarship

  • Maintains knowledge of the changing environment of nursing and nursing education;
  • Serves as an expert in the role of the nurse through evidence and research;
  • Initiates research activities, as appropriate, at the College and through work with clinical affiliates;
  • Publishes scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals in either the area of expertise or the education/trends of nursing students;
  • Presents scholarly work at national and international conferences.

Job Requirements:

  • PhD or DNP in Nursing or related field is required
  • Unencumbered active  license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of South Carolina or a Compact state

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five years of nursing experience in service or education as a registered nurse in the areas of pediatrics and/or women’s health
  • Prior academic experience is preferred
  • Certification in a nursing specialty is preferred
