The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, located in Charleston, South Carolina, invites applications for a Tenure-Track position in Biology, at the level of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2024. This search is specifically aimed at hiring an organismal biologist.

The Citadel is a fully accredited, public, comprehensive, co-educational college with a student body of about 2,300 undergraduate students who make up the South Carolina Corps of Cadets. Another 1,000 students attend The Citadel Graduate College, a civilian evening and online program that offers graduate and professional degrees. The biology department offers a BS biology major as well as a MA graduate degree. For the past twelve years, U.S. News and World Report has ranked The Citadel as the top public college in the South among masters granting institutions.

Located in the culturally rich coastal city of Charleston, SC, the area is home to numerous historic sites and buildings, the nation’s first natural history museum, Fort Sumter and other historic military installations, a highly acclaimed symphony, first class restaurants, theaters, and the Riverdogs minor league baseball team. Numerous opportunities exist for boating, biking, surfing, and running, including the nationally popular annual Bridge run over the Ravenel.

Position Responsibilities: Teaching undergraduate students in introductory biology and other courses within the individual’s area of expertise. Periodically, the faculty member will also be expected to teach in the college’s general education curriculum and evening graduate program. A normal teaching load is twelve credit hours per semester. Other responsibilities include mentoring students in research, contributing to curriculum creation and revision, participating in faculty governance, and performing service to the institution.

The candidate is also expected to achieve and maintain scholarly productivity consistent with departmental and college-wide policies for tenure and promotion. We particularly encourage individuals to apply whose research is integrative (e.g. ethology, population ecology, conservation biology, behavioral ecology, natural history, molecular systematics, bioinformatics) and involves student participation. There are opportunities for collaborative research with local state and federal agencies, including the Medical University of South Carolina, NOAA, and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Citadel faculty can also be nominated to serve as research graduate faculty for the College of Charleston’s MS programs in Marine Biology and Environmental and Sustainability Studies. The Citadel supports faculty scholarship and professional development through internal funding for research, development, and travel. Research laboratory space and startup funds are available.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants should possess a doctoral degree in biology or a closely-related field from an accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior teaching experience and the ability to demonstrate excellence in undergraduate instruction; evidence of mentoring and engaging undergraduates in research.
