Position Responsibilities:

As a senior military college, The Citadel has a unique military tradition and a mission to educate and train principled leaders.  Within that mission, the College has identified the development of a climate center as a strategic priority.  As conceived, the Center will be housed in the Department of Physics, with a mission to increase interdisciplinary scholarship in the area of climate research that engages undergraduates primarily; foster partnerships with state and local agencies, industry, and community stakeholders; provide a launch pad for outreach and K-12 enrichment; and assist with developing new, interdisciplinary degree programs in climate studies.

Working with the Dean of the Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics, The Center Director will assume primary administrative duties and responsibility for center operations; fundraising and external grants; development of relationships across the college, within the community, and beyond. Existing projects and partnerships include ecology faculty engaged in climate change research, chemistry faculty performing atmospheric and planetary studies, physics faculty conducting studies of mesoscale flood tide analysis with local government, engineering faculty who are Co-PIs on a NOAA Resilience grant, and our strong ties to South Carolina Sea Grant.

The Department of Physics has 7 tenure-line faculty plus several adjunct faculty and offers the BS in Physics along with minors in aerospace science and applied physics.  The normal teaching load for the Director is six hours per week and may include fundamental courses in physics and climate science, with class sizes typically less than 25 students.

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned doctorate in physics or closely-related field with a specialization in climate science (atmospheric and oceanic science, meteorology, geophysics, etc.) and experience commensurate with the rank of associate or full professor at The Citadel.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstration of and a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service; a record of successful program/research administration and leadership; proven success in fundraising and external grant seeking; demonstrated ability to develop collaborations within a college environment and with external partners; evidence of having sustained a robust research program that can engage undergraduate students; and experience engaging in community outreach and with K-12 education.  Candidates should exemplify The Citadel’s core values of honor, duty, and respect.
