Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences

The Citadel invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS). Candidates must possess an earned doctorate and have a strong commitment to promoting liberal education and scholarship at a student-centered college.

The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, founded in 1842, is a co-educational state-assisted college dedicated to achieving excellence in the education of principled future leaders. It is located in historic Charleston, a city known for its unique charm and high quality of life. The School is comprised of the following departments: English, Fine Arts, and Communications; History; Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures; Political Science; Criminal Justice; Intelligence and Security Studies; and Psychology. It is the largest academic unit of The Citadel and enrolls approximately 951 undergraduates in its degree programs, and 210 graduate students in seven masters programs and an Ed.S. program offered through the Citadel Graduate College. Its 72 tenured and tenure-track faculty are actively engaged in teaching, research, scholarship, and service to The Citadel and the community.

The Dean is responsible for the daily operations of the School and will coordinate, support and promote a wide range of educational and scholarly activities through strong leadership and prudent management. The Citadel seeks a proven leader with a distinguished academic record and significant administrative experience. The Dean will strengthen the School’s alumni relationships, articulate the importance of the humanities and social sciences in the education of all students, and promote the core values of The Citadel.

Minimum qualifications:

• Earned doctorate in one of the disciplines represented in SHSS, or closely related discipline.
• Evidence of distinguished teaching, research, and scholarly work appropriate to qualify for appointment as a tenured full professor.
• A record of progressive effective administrative experience in higher education that includes planning, resource development, budgeting and faculty development.
• Commitment to promoting excellence and diversity in the recruitment, retention, and development of students and faculty.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated ability to forge strong collaborations with internal and external constituencies.

Preferred qualifications:

• Demonstrated ability to strategize course scheduling and enrollments.
• Commitment to and experience in building innovative curricular and/or programs, to include multi-modal, digital, and problem-based learning.
• Strong advocate for the liberal arts; experience representing and promoting the interests of faculty and students to the university at large.
